A surge is a brief (20-40 second) high-intensity acceleration inserted within a continuous effort (tempo, long run, race). Unlike a classic interval, a surge is not followed by easy recovery: the runner immediately returns to base pace. Surges train the lactate production-clearance cycle under load and simulate race pace changes (accelerations after turns, tactical surges, climbs).
